His Achievements

Richard Liu made history when he founded JD in 1998. He was only 29 years old, and his company was one of China’s first online shopping businesses. It wasn’t easy to secure funding for his idea, but he eventually managed to get enough investors to make it happen. He was so successful with his business that by 2007 he achieved a net worth of $165 million. This put him on the Forbes billionaire list and landed him a spot among China’s wealthiest people.

Liu Qiangdong later got into trouble with the Chinese government, however. In 2014 he was arrested on allegations of rape and kidnapping, and he spent 21 days in jail. The courts later abandoned the charges, and he was freed. The ordeal caused him to lose a lot of money, but he is still one of China’s wealthiest people.

While in high school and college, Richard Liu was a computer engineer. He worked in the Beijing office of Baidu, China’s version of Google, starting in 1998 and continuing until 2006. During that time, he helped with Baidu’s online search engine and email services, which were the subject of heavy government regulation due to their involvement in censoring sites.

He also appeared on CCTV to speak about his work on the search engine. In 2007 he left Baidu to start his own company called JD (Chinese for “JD”), doing something completely different from what he had done for the better part of his professional career.
